There are 33 island nations and territories in the Caribbean and last year, eight were significantly affected by hurricanes Maria and Irma. Anguilla, Barbuda, the British Virgin Islands, Dominica, Puerto Rico, St. Barts, St. Maarten (St. Martin)<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>and the US Virgin Islands were impacted by the storms.<\/p>\n<p>How are they doing a year later? Let\u2019s have a look.<\/p>\n<p>Some islands remained completely unaffected, like Jamaica, St. Lucia, Cayman Islands, Aruba and Barbados.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Insider tip:<\/strong>\u00a0Aruba is south of the hurricane belt so it\u2019s rare for the island to come in contact with a hurricane.<\/p>\n<h2>United States Virgin Islands<\/h2>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7395 size-large\" title=\"St. Croix\" src=\"https:\/\/www.funjetinsider.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/USVI-St-Croix-Buck-Island-1024x684.jpg\" alt=\"Buck-Island-National-Monument-St-Croix-US-Virgin-Islands\" width=\"580\" height=\"387\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The USVI have had 100% of power restored since March 2018, but a little over 50% of accommodations are open and welcoming guests.<\/p>\n<h3>Hotels open on St. Croix<\/h3>\n<p>Hotel on the Cay<\/p>\n<p>Sand Castle on the Beach<\/p>\n<p>The Buccaneer<\/p>\n<h3>Hotels open on St. Thomas<\/h3>\n<p>Bolongo Bay<\/p>\n<h3>Hotels reopening on\u00a0St. Thomas<\/h3>\n<p>Windward Passage at the beginning of January 2019<\/p>\n<h3>Hotels reopening on\u00a0St. John<\/h3>\n<p>Caneel Bay at the beginning of January 2019<\/p>\n<p>St. Thomas and St. Croix\u2019s airports are open and announced plans to expand and update them totaling to a $230 million project. The St. Thomas airport terminal finished in 1989 and St. Croix\u2019s terminal was completed in the late 1990\u2019s. Both haven\u2019t received renovations since.<\/p>\n<p>The USVI Commissioner of Tourism was transparent and informative in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.travelweekly.com\/In-the-Hot-Seat\/US-Virgin-Islands-Department-Tourism-Beverly-Nicholson-Doty\">this article<\/a>\u00a0that the USVI still have a ways to go for a full recovery, but due to all of the work that\u2019s being done, visitors can expect a new and improved USVI.<\/p>\n<h2>Puerto Rico<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-7391\" src=\"https:\/\/www.funjetinsider.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Puerto-Rico-USE-1024x764.jpg\" alt=\"Puerto Rico\" width=\"580\" height=\"433\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As of August 2018, almost 90% of Puerto Rico\u2019s hotel inventory is available. Through hard work and perseverance, a handful of\u00a0<em>new\u00a0<\/em>hotels are opening this year. The airport, 13 golf courses, 16 casinos, more than 2,000 restaurants, and 189 tourist attractions are open. Areas of El Yunque National Forest are still closed, but some trails are accessible. The park will fully reopen after a renovation that upgrades the visitor information center.<\/p>\n<h3>Hotels open on Puerto Rico<\/h3>\n<p>InterContinental San Juan<\/p>\n<p>San Juan Marriott Resort &amp; Stellaris Casino<\/p>\n<p>Sheraton Puerto Rico Hotel &amp; Casino<\/p>\n<p>Sheraton Old San Juan<\/p>\n<p>Embassy Suites By Hilton San Juan Hotel &amp; Casino<\/p>\n<p>Embassy Suites By Hilton Dorado Del Mar Beach Resort<\/p>\n<p>ESJ Azul<\/p>\n<p>Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Puerto Rico Golf &amp; Beach Resort<\/p>\n<p>San Juan Water Beach Club<\/p>\n<p>and more!<\/p>\n<h3>Hotels reopening on Puerto Rico<\/h3>\n<p>The Ritz-Carlton, Reserve Dorado Beach on 10\/1\/18<\/p>\n<p>El San Juan Resort on 10\/1\/18<\/p>\n<p>St. Regis Bahia Beach on 12\/1\/18<\/p>\n<p>Melia Coco Beach on 12\/15\/18<\/p>\n<p>Condado Plaza on 12\/16\/18<\/p>\n<p>Puerto Rico recently got an app called My Puerto Rico designed to improve the visitor experience and adapt to the modern traveler. Hotels use the software to communicate with guests via text message and the app. Dining, transportation, and attraction information are also available in it and anyone visiting the island can use the app.<\/p>\n<h2>St. Maarten (St. Martin)<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-7392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.funjetinsider.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/StMaarten_1200x612_DutchSide-1024x522.jpg\" alt=\"St-Maarten-Dutch-side-Caribbean\" width=\"580\" height=\"296\" \/><\/p>\n<p>St. Martin airport is open, but under construction until the beginning of 2020. However, hurricane season officially starts June 1st, peaks in August\/September and can go through November.
