Traveling Tahiti: Moorea to Bora Bora

Have you ever dreamed of jumping into a quiet ocean lagoon from the balcony of an over-the-water bungalow? How about opening up your coffee table to feed the fish below? When you watch The Bachelor do you ever daydream about being whisked away one of those tropical paradises?

If you answered yes to any of these questions then read on for an itinerary that’s perfect for a honeymoon or a check mark on the old bucket list.

Getting to Tahiti

Picture yourself with the perfect tropical dress and a great pair of wedges as you grab your sweetie and jet off to Tahiti! Sure, it’s a bit of a flight but we promise it’s worth it from the moment you land in French Polynesia.

Your flight will bring you to the capital, Papeete, where you’ll board a much smaller plane for the short island hop to Moorea. Get ready for breathtaking views as you fly through the heart and soul of the South Pacific.

Moorea is arguably one of the most romantic places in the entire world… after all the island is shaped like a heart. Soaring mountains give way to lagoons as clear as the vodka in your first mojito.

Where to Stay in Moorea

Relax and breathe in the fresh island air as you arrive at the Hilton Moorea Resort & Spa. You’ll likely be given your first lei, a customary greeting for visitors in Tahiti. The leis are typically made with the Tlare Tahiti flower which is only found in Tahiti and smells amazing.

If you choose an over the water bungalow you’ll be enjoying the essence of what makes Tahiti famous. Your private oasis includes a personal sun deck and swim dock. There’s nothing more romantic than opening your doors and enjoying panoramic views of the mountains and lagoons that most people will only get to see in photos.

What to Do in Moorea

The beach on property is an oasis of white sand and the infinity pool offers a chance to relax the day away. Nearly every spa amenity is available and each experience is rich in Tahitian influence. Enjoy wonderful food on property or venture to one of many great local restaurants nearby. You might want to splurge with a visit to the Tiki Theatre Village where you’ll be surrounded by traditional Polynesian decor and you’ll be amazed by the traditional dinner and dance show.

If you enjoy a more adventurous itinerary, sign up to swim with sharks. The black tips  and lemon sharks couldn’t be more excited to have you in the water with them. My husband talked me into this over tropical cocktails one night at this resort and for some crazy reason I agreed. We were picked up by two locals and joined a couple from Germany for the experience. When we arrived at the spot the sharks swarmed our boat and our guide jumped right in without fear. It took me a lot longer! I did it though and now it is one of my most fond memories from my honeymoon.

There are dozens of day trips to choose from if swimming with sharks does not fall within your idea for a relaxing exotic beach vacation. You can drive through the rain forest, take a dip with the dolphins, or be whisked away on a beautiful sail boat. The options will have you as busy as you choose to be during your time on the beautiful island.

Bora Bora

If you’re traveling all the way to Moorea, I have to suggest adding Bora Bora on to your trip. It is more remote and there aren’t nearly as many restaurants off resort property but will be more than worth your while. Wherever you choose to stay, you’ll likely be picked up from the airport by a yacht that will take you to your resort. I mean, how else could you possibly continue the perfect vacation?

Where to eat in Bora Bora

Make sure you visit the world famous Bloody Mary’s on the main island and indulge in the fresh catch of the day. Yes, this restaurant was featured on an episode of the Kardashians but they are probably some of the least famous people that have been spotted at this restaurant so keep your eyes peeled!
